#TeamAmish

Hi peeps,

First off I apologize for my delayed Blog. I'm starting to realize lately I’ve been busier than I was in college...and I didn’t think that was possible. Turns out a 9-5 job, physical therapy, working out, travel, family, friends, fun, and sleep is a lot to balance. Time management and prioritizing are definitely just as important in post-grad life as they were in college. As much as I try to convince myself I can, I’m starting to realize I can’t do it all. Sacrifices are necessary, so for now, I’ve made one... sleep. I can sleep when I'm dead.

I’m wired to go go go, and for me, that means trying to cram in as much in one day as I can. My mother thinks I’m crazy, but I can’t help it! I like to have fun, explore, try new things, and make the most of every opportunity. Life really is an adventure and I’m just trying to #liveitup. I’m telling myself I’m going to rest once my internship is finished (we’ll see if that happens), but for now I’m a woman on the move.

I recently made a trip back to Kentucky for July 4th where I filled just about every free moment with what I like to call #funtime. Also, apologize for my obsession with hashtags. There's no rhyme or reason to why I hashtag certain things. But if it feels right, it #feelsright. After spending the last month in Chicago, I was dying to see my family and get back to small-town life in the bluegrass for a bit. It definitely makes you appreciate things more after living in a big city. The hustle and bustle are fun - not going to lie, but there’s just something special about small-town life. Like free parking for one.  And taxi drivers not running you over. And grass. And mutton sandwiches. Ahh, mutton sandwiches.

The view from my sister's house is quite lovely

Mutton - Noun: the flesh of sheep, especially mature sheep, used as food.

I made it back home just in time to spend the 4th in the most American way possible. On a boat. On the beautiful Ohio River. The Ohio River may or may not have just taken the crown of the #1 most polluted body of water in the United States (7 years running). BUT beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, and I think it’s beautiful. I grew up on that river with my pops, so the good memories outweigh the driftwood and dead bodies that float down from time to time… KIDDING! I rarely see driftwood... It may be slightly polluted and not so slightly brown but as long as you have some good company, a decent sandbar, and some watermelon, it’s a good time.

It felt so so good to get back on a jet ski again. The key is to find a smooth flat cove and rev that baby up. I use to get them up to 70 mph, but I could only get 59 this time for whatever reason. Either I got fatter, or they need some maintenance. Regardless, it was a blast.

And to update y'all about whether or not I encountered Asian Carp... I’m sad to report I did. No, not as dramatic as the picture from my last blog.. but here is proof.

Look Closer

Closer

Boom! Proof.

Another gem along the Ohio River is the river camp. People love to complain about small towns and how there's nothing to do...but fun can be had anywhere people! And the river camp is fun. String lights, some live country music on an elevated surface, and good people along the river...what's not to love? Nights like that make me proud to be from a small town.

River Camp - noun: aggregation of campers, cabins, and tents along the Ohio River where people flock for a good time

Yep - that's my dad staring directly at the camera in blue

It was a perfect time to be home because almost the whole family was back in town to celebrate my Granny and Grandpa’s 50th wedding anniversary. 50 years people! That’s quite the accomplishment. They even received a plaque from the Commonwealth of KY House of Representatives to prove it!

#Goals

I'm the awkwardly tall one

I have to give a special shoutout to my Granny for being the coolest Granny in the world. I brag to my friends about her all the time. Not only is she a saint, she leads weekly bible study, has impeccable style AND she’s practically famous…Walmart Famous that is. I’m not kidding when this lady goes into the local Walmart in Morganfield, KY she gets stopped and talked to by at least 10 different people. I went with her one time, we probably spent 30 of our 45 minutes there talking to her fans. She is truly a local superstar.

Bet your Granny can't rock a pant suit

I also got to see my precious nephew baby Jaxson. He’s only 6 mo. old and he is quite the hunk. He’s one lucky boy because his 3 Aunts spoil him to death. I mean look at this cuteness. His momma (my sister Rachel) always calls him a “ham-bone”. “You’re such a little ham-bone, yes you are Jax! (baby talk voice)”. What that means... I’ll never know. But it's stuck and he’s the cutest little ham-bone I’ve ever seen.

#LadiesMan

It was also good to see the “littles” as I call them aka Briley and Emma (my youngest sisters). I love these kids to death but like most kids these days they’re pretty glued to their phones, iPads, etc. Rachel and I get on them all the time for it, so we decided to take them on a little field trip to somewhere technology is nonexistent! Where else to learn about simple living than... the Amish community!

I mean what else would you rather do on a Saturday afternoon than ride in a horse and buggy? It was quite the experience.

We got a grand tour from Denny Hardesty, Rachel’s father in law. He sells corn to the Amish so he’s basically famous within the community. We did it all. We went to the local bakery and enjoyed freshly made donuts, toured a local house, and even went to an Amish auction!

These people are impressive! This family's refrigerator is powered by a diesel engine in the feed mill (across the yard) that is connected to underground cords running up into this coil filled cooler, that runs into the fridge beside it to keep it cool. I get confused just typing that but you get the point. I personally thought the entire experience was cool and eye opening, Emma thought otherwise...

Kid acts like she's never seen horse poop before

She was ready to break Amish

It was quite the experience and truly makes you realize we have it easy. Everyone I met there was so nice, welcoming and seemed genuinley happy. There were kids actually playing outside having fun, not bored complaining about a dead battery. They aren't reliant on technology for happiness and they don't allow external presure to shape their beliefs and lifestyle. It was refreshing to see and really puts things into perspective. Life is pretty simple, but we don't make it that way all the time. While I don't plan on rocking an Amish dress anytime soon.. I'm #TeamAmish all the way.

If this isn't the cutest thing you've ever seen...

Finally, to cap off the weekend, I went to my hometown of Owensboro for my friend’s wedding! My first friend's wedding that is... (I’m getting old). S/o to the Millers! It was basically a mini-High School reunion that did not disappoint. Unsure if Owensboro weddings are just naturally fun or if my friends are just a different breed of humans.. but we had a blast. I don’t know many groups of people that have a synchronized dance when the song Dixieland Delight comes on.. but I’m proud to say my friends do. #GetYourFiddlesLadies

Being home was a nice refresher from the big city life. Makes me remember how blessed I am to have such an awesome family and friends and to come from such a supportive tight-knit community. I’m already excited to get back there in August once my internship is finished. Alsooo excited to be putting on my first basketball camp in Owensboro Saturday, August 18th (#ad). Sign up at www.rebeccagreenwell.com spots are going quick!!! Okay, that is all.

But seriously sign up... :)
